Draft Evaluation

Draft for treatment

“A young woman who is mentally, physically, sexually harassed by the men at her workplace which then spirals her to drugs”

“Pushing Buttons”

Title-Pushing buttons denotes the concept where the metaphor “pushing buttons” is used to describe how women feel when they are harassed, pressurised, discriminated and be littled to the point where they feel trapped, where they can’t go and seek, help and express their inner feelings because they simply don’t want to lose their job or lose the opportunity to be independent. They have been cornered into depression which could have severe consequences physically and mentally. This is the narrative of “pushing buttons”. The title will truly fit into British social realism as it is a unique title, as the audience reads the title they will instantly think about what the meaning is to pushing buttons which therefore create enigma. Many British social realism titles symbolize the characters persona or themes which are portrayed through the whole storyline. Pushing buttons his highlight the women’s life n the workplace which creates symbolism throughout the whole movie. This will appeal to the target audience as the title capture a mysterious side to the movie as to how the woman is treated.

Target audience

Age- 16-24 year olds
Gender- both females and males
Interest- British social realism movie
Location- London
Ethnicity- all

This British social realism movie gets people to think about their behaviour and raises awareness of bullying and harassment, this also highlights responsibilities for all staff and managers, outlines organisation policies and procedures for dignity at work and the options to stop bullying and harassment and prevent their recurrence, it also displays to the audience how to take personal action. This will be great for my target audience 16-24 as mainly you would start working at that age and also young people are targeted to harassment as they are seen more vulnerable. My film “pushing buttons” will give realization to the audience as it can inform people to keep the workplace free from bullying and harassment by spotting and stopping inappropriate behaviour and nipping it in the bud. It also might inspire people by gaining listening, criticism, coaching, and dispute resolution and mediation skills which could help other people.

Unique selling point-My film will appeal to my target audience as its sending awareness to the younger class in addition there have been alot of cases on sexual harassment and it has become a huge topic over the news. Not that many people are taken action over this so for that reason this why I’m creating a two minute British social realism opening sequence on sexual harassment. The case which I will be exploiting in my movie is Jian Ghomeshi. The case of Jian Ghomeshi has raised concern about the extent of such behaviour in all workplaces. This gave me alot of inspiration to create a British social realism movie on this topic. This is a short summary of the case “Eight women from across Canada now accuse former CBC host Jian Ghomeshi of abusive behaviour ranging from allegations of beating and choking without consent, to workplace sexual harassment”. This will be a great unique selling point as I’m making a case into an actual movie and also it will send great awareness as not that many British social realism movies send messages to the audience.

From this video I could get ideas of what type of footage to include in my opening sequence. I could connote real life events of this women getting sexually harassed.

Technology

The technology we are going to use is a hand held camera/tripod camera which the school has accessed for us. The use of the hand held camera will give a rustic effect to the footage as it creates realism to the audience. The use of a tripod will create a smooth footage however I’m going to try to avoid this as it doesn’t create that much realism. All my footage is going to be hand held. The dolly which gives movement to the piece will be helpful as it creates more action. I would love to try to put the camera on top of the car but I will need to try to find that certain equipment to do that. I need to be aware of the atmosphere around the camera as it might disturb my filming.

Representations

The key character in our film are sundeep, she’s going to portray the protagonist, the men and interviewer-antagonists. Other antagonists could be sexual harassment as its affecting her life to become independent. Drugs can also be an antagonist as its exploiting her bad nature and she’s trying to avoid the fact that she is being verbally and physically harassed. The archetypes of our BSR which are shown in my film are; sundeep who embodies the lost boy. This is shown when she got an offer at a big office and she might get a successful career however during the interview she never got through but the interviewer gave her a chance to become a member but to do that she had to have sex with him which therefore affected her to get the job. During that she then got sexually harassed and verbally harassed throughout the workplace as rumours were spreading around the office that she would do anything to get the job. The men in the work place will be a range of different ages to show the significance of sexual harassment at any age they could be a target. There is going to be no dialogue involved as it brings out to much of the narrative so I will try to portray some action for example a man touching the ladies waist or eyes staring at her. I’m not going to try to make it to obvious as I’m going to portray some enigma throughout the opening sequences.

the protagonists clothes
Our film subverts to the typical representations of some men as they are sometimes violent and also very sexually exposed. This is shown in our movie when one of the men forcefully sexually harassing the women at the workplace and everyone is avoiding it. By subverting these representations it truly fits in to the British Social Realism genre and some of our audience might even feel as though they are able to relate to this typical situation hence its creating awareness as workplaces.
diffrent aged men

Narrative

Pushing buttons introduces a young working class woman who gets an offer from an office. Throughout the stages of interviews she didn’t get the job however the man gave her a chance to get the job if she has sex with him. As the women got the job  she gets, harassed, pressurised, discriminated and be littled to the point where she feels trapped, where she can’t go and seek, help and express her inner feelings because she simply doesn’t want to lose her job or lose the opportunity to be independent. As the harassment proceeds, rumours are spreading around the work place about her sexual acts. The men have cornered her into depression which leads her to severe consequences physically and mentally. This is a real life story which involves “sexual harassment”. This follows the case of is Jian Ghomeshi. The case of Jian Ghomeshi has raised concern about the extent of such behaviour in all workplaces. This story is going to be linear, omniscient narrative as the film will show the point of view of the women getting harassed.

In the two minute opening of the sequence I’m going to introduce a smash mouth opening. Firstly I’m going to introduce the main character who is getting ready to work and then she goes to an interview. The interview touches her hand. A long shot of the door closing. This will create enigma as to why is she doing this certain act with the interviewer. The door opens of the interviewer sorting his tie out, the screen fades. At the workplace men are looking at her and touching her. A shot will be portyed of her in a train looking depressed and overwhelmed. The next shot has her and a few drugs in her hands and then it ends there with a cut.

The actors in our movie are not famous which perfectly fits in to British social realism as they use unknown characters We will use engaging music so it will create tension and also a bi of excitement as what the shots are portraying. A voice over is going to be used right at the beginning to introduce the character.

Conventions

Throughout the footage I’m going to portray British social realism conventions for example the film self giant uses pathetically throughout the whole movie. Mise-en-scene is used in a Establishing Shot with a cut (transition) which pictures a gloomy grey sky. The Mise-en-scene connotes the danger and ambiguity. The dreary clouds could imply a metaphoric storm that is almost immediately to destruct the lives of the characters thus it could be hinting out a characters death. I could use this in my own production by having the character in the park, and then it starts raining, this shows the intense atmosphere. I’m going to use natural lighting to keep the realism flowing and to make it more natural. All the actors are unknown which fits in to British social realism; if we had Hollywood stars hey would over exaggerate the whole movie making it to fake. I’m going to use real locations for example canary whalf and cbni office, this will introduce the theme of working class people. The set is going to be very simple dont want it to be too grand as it takes away the realism. Throughout the shots I’m going to use hand held camera teqniques as it creates atmosphere towards the footage and also it also makes the audience involved. I’m going to also use jerky camera movements to highlight the uneasy persona of the character. Throughout the whole footage a pan will be used as it create more movement in the footage. Loose framing is going to be used as well.i going to have arranged of medium/close-ups to highlight emotions from characters particularly the main character. I am going to include a high angle to portray the dominance of men and low angle to portyed how women are degraded in society. Our takes are going to be slow pace at the beginning and then very fast till the end. My British social realism movie is not going to include a hybrid as I want to denote a serious opening sequence.

Style and Iconography

The types of camerawork which I will love to use are the hand help camera. The unsteady camera illustrates the restlessness in the characters’ persona. For example I could have a footage of the women in the train sitting in the corner crying has she has been harassed by a guy. This will create a great effect to the audience as it highlights her uneasy persona. In Social Realism films they use handheld camera shots mainly to add to the realism and give a natural feel to the scene. I could also use quick cuts or long takes to make the footage flow and to make the quick cuts reflect how characters feel or the intensity of the scene. This is specifically used well in this scene of shifty how as an audience we see a guy in the bus with the camera shaking which is reflecting his uneasy mood. This could be my interpretation of my won scene of women in a train crying. I can also use a bird’s eye view shot from canary wharf. This connotes the location of the movie will based around this certain area. This is common in British social realism as they use very realistic areas to highlight the theme of working class people. I would also want to include a shot of the women standing in the middle and at the back we see alot of people walking past here. I would use a fast pace edit as it highlight her enclosed personality. I could also portray track of here walking towards her work place. Throughout all the shots I’m going to use the movement pan so the audience feels more involved in the situation she is at and also it doesn’t make the shot to boring and still. I’m going to use some close-ups to highlight her emotions and also include a loose framing.

During the beginning of the clip I would like to use a voice over of the women talking about her experience in the workplace however I would not like to give away to much as I want to try to create enigma to the audience. I also want to include no sound in someplace of the footage to exploit the intense atmosphere; as a result this gives the audience an intense feels towards the movie. I’m going to include an urban soundtrack which is non-Diegetic. This might represent the films locations and the different types of characters. The urban music may represent a rough, underprivileged area in London which is common in British social realism however I dont want the urban music to overshadow the footage. Hence I would like to make the urban music a less upbeat.

Institution
25% of an independent film’s budget. Film Four Productions have built a reputation for producing social realist films, often referred to as kitchen sink dramas. They often use a very rough and ready style of camerawork and design, using real life locations, unknown or untrained actors and are often set in regional, heavily accented areas. They deal with politically sensitive and controversial themes such as race, social taboos, homosexuality in a very extreme and graphic fashion Using unknown characters is going to be useful as I'm going to pick myself to be the main actress for the movie inaddtion this connects with the ethos of developing new British talent as its states that The ethos of film 4 is that they want to "Develop new British Talent and be leader of innovation in the British film industry”. This could devolpe my acting career as producers can access to YouTube pages and look at the talent which I produced. Film four also like creative ideas and this will perfectly fit in as my idea is about a women getting harassed. This could make the audience think about what they do in the living and how some of these causes could affect them. Also film four proper highlight the gritty life of some peoples life and we are exploiting a life of women who gets harassed verbally and physically.

The target audience we were given was between the ages 16-24. As our film is a British Social Realism film, this will have to appeal and communicate to the British public hence the movie will be distributed in the UK as we mainly have a British audience here. The age range could be a disadvantage as that age you would be concentrating on study and exams. This is why I’m going to stream my movie on the internet and make them as pop-ups/adverts on the side of the website however I would like to showcase my movie in a main stream cinema. For new technology we could showcase the movie on Amazon prime or twitter as they could be a trending topic. This could really bring out our target audience as they mainly use technology these days and they could trend the topic around worldwide. The movie will be very popular on the internet however the audience will not be paying attention to the cinema as students dont have that much time to go there.

I think it good to put the movie online instead of being it in the cinema as it is easy to access and easy to watch. Also it’s going to be free online so that gives an advantage to our audience to watch the movie.

Social Realism Timeline

Hey everyone welcome to my blog, for today’s post I’m going show a timeline of social realism and also in what ways has British social realism evolved over the last sixty years.

Social realism is a film that focuses on issues that represents the modern society. This is through different ideologies. Many themes that are used include money, drugs, class, religion and political views.

British social realism conventions

Room at the top

l6Fizj
Themes and situation: The room at the top denotes a shot of man in pain this denotes the theme of violence as the use of Mise-en-scene makeup highlights the blood and scars on his face. Also it might portray poverty as there are stranded kids on the street with tatty clothes and also scars. Characters: The characters include children as young as 8 running around the place and a man who is nearly dyeing on the street, a women who is dressed very posh ,she could be the wife of the man who is on the floor, also with the posh lady their a man with her. The posh lady and the men may come from upper class as they are wearing very glamour’s clothes. Location and setting The location is set around a violent place which has a big car accident Sound: Dialogue is played at the end but also instruments are played in the background and its very dramatic as it becomes loud when something bad happens for example the kid pushing the toy car, this created a very good effect to the audience as it creates tension. Camerawork editing: They had really nice close ups of the man’s face to highlight the pain and bad event which occurred.Other Mise-en-scene: The use of the car shows upper-class as it is very stylish and also the toy car portrays innocence’s as a kid is playing around with it.

Poor cow

SGEo7i
Themes and situation: The gif denotes a mid shot of a mother and father feeding their child, this connotes that the theme is going too based around parenting, parenthood as there is a child in the footage. This is usually stereotypical in BSR. Also the theme of love is represented throughout the footage as the parents are both snuggled up in their beds and also showing their love towards the child as they take the child out doors.Characters: The characters include a father a mother who I think is a single parent and a child roughly a toddler. Location and setting: The footage is set in London as there is a clear establish shot of London. All the lighting is naturalistic and also this will fit the bsr.Sound: music is playing at the background of the footage, there is no dialogue, and the music is very positive and happy which therefore fits in to the actions which the parents are portraying. The music he is playing is called the Donovan's Colours.Camerawork editing: They have really nice close-ups do portrays the happiness of the family and nothing bad is going to happen also the different kind of shots like long shot captures the true love of parenting for the child which I really love. Mise-en-scene: It is connoted that they used natural lighting and also the use of props for example the guitar truly shows the essence of love as they are all in one room singing.
The music he is playing is called the Donovan's Colours.Below is the link for the video

Bronco bull frog

BL0WZq
Themes and situation: The main theme I would say is corruption of youth as the main character is chasing around a girl and also one the characters which I think is the mother saying “dont be saucy” which might relate to sex. Characters: Include a boy who is chaing around a girl,a mother who stays at home and a group of friends drinking at a table.Location and setting: The location is based around London also they have many different types of locations for example they have a house, the pier and the road. These types of locations fit into the genre of BSR. Sound: A song is playing at the background which creates a happy mood.Camerawork editing: Other Mise-en-scene: The use of the motorcycle might show they are upper class and the use of alcohol might revel their addiction to drinking.

My beautiful laundrette

gV90dN
This scene takes place on the day of Powders Laundrette's grand opening. Omar is now engaged to marry Tania and Johnny, jealous, runs off. Omar tracks him down and orders him to get back to work as the laundrette needs to stay open round-the-clock to make money. Papa Hussein mistakenly turns up for the opening ceremony at 3am instead of 3pm. He confronts Johnny about his fascist past when Johnny had marched through the streets and racially taunted him.Themes and situation: The image denotes a man talking to a guy, this connotes that one of the main themes is working class as the character clearly states “oh dear a working class such a great disappointment to me”, thus the character obviously doesn’t like Woking class people which therefore creates an social class clash Characters: Include a posh guy who is upper class and a other guy who is working class which therefore has a big contrast between them.Location and setting: The set is set in a laundry place which links to the title of the movie. Sound: Dialogue is present throughout the whole movie also the use of naturalistic sound is present for example the use of the door banging and people talking in the background. Camerawork editing: They have nice over the shoulder shots where we can see the actor reacting and nice close ups of their facial expression, Other Mise-en-scene: The use of the laundry buckets and clothes really create a realistic scene as many people of that time use to go  to that pace to clean their clothes and also the clothing portrays there characters for example the posh guys clothing look very expensive but in contrast with the other guy he is just wearing a jacket with baggy clothes.
Nil by mouth

Themes: domestic violence, broken relationship and cheating. The gif denotes a midshot of a man called nil beating up his wife, this connotes that the theme of this footage is domestic violence as it clearly highlights the physical abuse towards the wife. Also it connotes that the women is cheating on his husband as it is publicized in the dialogue, “how many times have you seen this fu**in Pete” which subsequently is another theme, cheating. Thus the relationship between the couple is unconstructive. Characters: Bullying irritated husband, women feeble. It is clearly exposed that the main character Nil is the antagonist as the footage portrays him as a psychopath due to the fact he is abusing his wife. It is also shown that the character nil is dominant as he overpowers his voice on his wife. The wife is seen as a lower status towards her husband as she gets physically abused by nil with therefore highlights the alpha male’s dominance towards the wife. Sound: Throughout the scène of the physical abuse you can only hear Diegetic noises as the  wife in shouting in pain but the camera is focused on nil which therefore create anxiety to the audience as they dont if the wife is safe or not. Also the dialogue is very abrupt and very verbal. Setting and location: The location is set in their house which denotes their everyday lifestyle witch then fits in to BSR also the use of the room is very small which therefore the characters have little space to create some action however the main focus of the scene is going to be in that room so the audience will be paying more attention. Mise-en-scene: It is connoted that they used natural lighting with  a blue tints to represent emotion, this therefore fits in to the realism of bsr.
dMvasZ

This is England

J2kfA3
Themes and situation: The image denotes a man punching a kid on his face, this connotes that the theme of the footage is violence also racial discrimination; this is shown as the man punches the kid which therefore highlights child abuse and the use of blood uses during 4.44 is quite horrific. The use of violence fits in bsr as it highlights the everyday struggles of some people. The use of racial discrimination is also highlight as the grown man calls a kid an offensive racist comment. Overall the theme is connoted well throughout the footage and it gives the audience a clear point that it’s going to be based around those two themes. Characters: When first seen, Combo can easily be classified as a psychopathic racist, holding extremely racist views on immigration and being prone to violent outbursts of anger very easily. there characters include a black kid and a white kid both separated from each othere. This might be a barrier of race against blacks and white. there are other grown men also sitting on the bed and on the chair. Location and setting: The location is set in a bedroom, this highlights the fact that they are living under class as there are two single beds for 4 people and the use of simple posters around the room highlights the everyday teenager point of view. Sound: Throughout the whole footage there is full on dialogue and in the dialogue there is alot of swearing and alot of verbal abuse. There is some music in the scene so it will create a tense atmosphere for the audience watching the footage. Camerawork editing: The use of the close ups are really interesting and effective as they highlight the violence and the innocence of the kids face. Other Mise-en-scene: The use of yellow tint is portrayed throughout the video and the use of posters show everyday teenager life.

Sightseers

Themes and situation: Image denotes a woman talking to man this clearly the theme of social class clash as there is a posh man arguing to the working class women for leaving her dog poop on the floor which create a humour to the footage. Characters: Includes a posh man who is from upper clash as his accent portrays he accent also the women portrays the ditzy women as she starts to cry hysterically. Location and setting: The location is set in the north which is highlighted through the Mise-en-scene of the hills and fresh green grass. Sound: The sound is very naturalistic as all the wind sounds and dialogue is very normal which creates the BSR realism in films. Camerawork editing: The camera language is quite straightforward and clear also there’s not that much movement going around. Other Mise-en-scene: the lighting is also naturalistic.
2PvETY

In what ways has British social realism evolved over the last sixty years?

Themes and situation: During the early years of 1950s the themes and situation was quite low key, there was more happiness for example love and parenting. However as year progressed there is more violent and brutal key themes for example there is more drug abuse/drug experimentation, corruption of youth, isolation and exclusion, sexual abuse, racism and other appalling themes. Characters: During the early years of 1950s the characters are less abusive but more nicer however as year progressed their language in there dialogue became more abusive and more racist, also the characters start to dress normally and plain but it fits in to their types of personality, also the characters are all unknown which creates the realism of bsr. Location and setting: The location has become more urban or more Greenland for example set in the north. Sound: The music has become more intense over the decades and also the dialogue has become more improvised. The use of non Diegetic and Diegetic is well used throughout the years as they keep the naturalistic noises.Camerawork editing: During the decades there has been more camera language for example more midshot however the movement of the camera is stationary so the audience will see the full action in one place.Other Mise-en-scene: The technology has upgraded throughout the decade also the use of bad props for example drugs and cigarettes are more clearly shown throughout the bsr films.

Evaluation for past student work

Hey guys, for todays post im going to be evualting past students work.

Below is a short evaluation of some of the past student footage and how it effects me when I will be creating my own production.

Suffocation

Now I’m going to start analysing some of the student’s work. The first one that I’m going to evaluate is “suffocation”.  They presented their credits really well also there graphics worked really well, the storyline was very clear in addition they had a good range of shots for examples close ups and mid shots. The weakness of their work has to be the main character clothing which does not relate to the situation they are in.

The gif denotes a guy who is stressing out over his work with a text transition below; this connotes one of the conventions of institutional credits. I really like how they present the text in a diagonal position laid on the books. The text lasts for  about 4 seconds on screen which is perfect as the audience can clearly read what the text is saying.

The jump cut was absolutely perfect as there was no disruptions on screens .This was one my favourite bits of the whole footage because as an audience it will be boring for the guy to walk for a long time but with the jump cut it shows that timing is running out for him to go home.

I really liked how they portrayed depression as it is denoted  in this shot of a girl holding wine, the  picture connotes her drinking problem which highlighted through the title suffocation as she is suffering from drinking. Thye audience might not find this clear as it was obvious in the class how people got confussed on this shot, to improve this shot they should of put some dialogue relating to her problem.

I gave this a mark out of 49 which is a level 4 as the material is appropriate for the target audience and task also the titles were used appropriately according to institutional conventions.

The actual mark given to suffocation: 42
Bridges (weak)

The sound one which I’m going to evaluate is “bridges”. With this one I had many weaknesses  the fact that there was no clear narrative, the 180 degree rule was broken when they filmed there shots and also the credit and title on the screen went off to quickly, this  was  very poor as the audience will not know what the credit or title is saying. The music also stopped half way, this was very random which made the footage awkward towards the end.

KmvyC8

The titles went off to quickly and you cannot see it well so i think they should of made the text black and bold so the audience could see the text

I would say one of the strengths is the typography for bridges as it fits the genre of their piece. The typography almost symbolize indian culte as they use this type of writing in asian culture.

mun_Ub

The continuity work is awful  at first his hands are up in the air and then all a sudden his hand are in his pockets this was very poor however i would say that the choice of mid-shot was a good choice as you could see their hands.

I gave this a level 2 and the mark 24 because I thought that the titles are appropriately according to institutional conventions and that the shooting material is appropriate to the task set which includes the use of camera and attention to framing ,the Varity of shots and close attention to Mise-en-scene.

The actual mark given to Bridges: 29

Other past students work

Maze

Maze had a really good music but I would say that the music was too upbeat so it didn’t fit the footage well. They had a good range of shots for example close-up and long shots. The theme fitted really well to social realism and also the Mise-en-scene looked really good as well. The story line was very clear also the music was hinting out some of the story of the footage which therefore worked really well.i gave this one out of level 54 as it was very interesting and diverted to other past students footage.

The actual mark given to Maze: 56

Damaged goods

The different shots worked really well thought the footage also the typical slutty character worked suited well to her character, very clear narrative was portrayed thought footage. The credits and tile worked very well and it was positioned on the right timings .Lovely range of shots. The one weakness which was present throughout the footage has to be the lighting, the footage was to dark so I couldn’t see what actions the character is trying to convey. I gave this a mark out of 56 which is a level 4.The reason why I choose this is because the titles and editing worked really well and it was appropriate to the target audience.

The actual mark given to damaged goods: 56

Southpaw

There was no dialogue which fits perfectly well for British films as they dont have that much talking at the beginning of the two minute footage. The music was very upbeat and also very gangsterly very good location. Locations are usually set in very poor and deprived areas, but most of all everyday places which anybody may come across in there day to day life. Locations are filmed in actual real places, which are different from most genres, which are mainly shot in studio/staged areas. The reasoning behind filming in these everyday areas makes the film seem truer to real life and more relatable to the viewer. This why i really liked the choice of location.

The actual mark given to south paw: 56

Drained

Overall I would say drained was my favourite opening out of all of them, the shots of there camera work was fantastic. I really like the range of camera shots for example the two shot of them talking to each other. The music and dialogue fitted the theme and also the titles came on the right timing and good choice of typography. However I would say the weakness of this movie was that the story line was unclear at times and the acting was quite forced which made is quite funny to watch and as an audience we dont want to see that.

The actual mark given to Drained: 58

Fast life

Fast life I found was really good as it had clear characters which are typical in British social realism and their typography suited the genre however I thought that the music was too loud, they just need to lower the music, and the transitions of the titles went off to fast which is hard for the audience to read.

The actual mark given to Fast life: 32
